Did you know that even the fanciest, shmanciest beauty products — skincare and makeup — can contain ingredients you might actually want to avoid?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m a total product junkie. I’ve tried everything. But over time, I became more mindful of what I put on my skin—not perfect, just informed. Sometimes, even knowing the risks, I’ll still use a product. At least then, it’s a conscious choice. And that’s the whole point of this article.
So let’s talk about a few ingredients worth paying attention to.
What are the least advised ingredients in skincare?
Number 1: Parabens (the “winner” nobody asked for)
Parabens are sneaky. They go by many names — methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isopropylparaben — but their role is always the same: preservation. They’re used to extend shelf life and prevent bacteria or fungi from growing.
The concern? Parabens can mimic estrogen in the body, which means they may interfere with hormonal balance. They’ve also been linked to skin sensitivity and irritation — something I personally experience. Red bumps, overall irritation… my skin lets me know when it’s not happy.
What to do about them?
Avoiding parabens entirely is hard. They’re everywhere — makeup, skincare, hair products, deodorant. My approach is balanced. I try to keep my skincare and haircare paraben-free, allowing more flexibility with makeup. Observe how your skin reacts. Chances are, once you notice the difference, you’ll naturally gravitate toward fewer parabens.
Number 2: Artificial Fragrance (Perfume)
Who doesn’t love a product that smells amazing? Unfortunately, your skin might not love it back.
Artificial fragrance is one of the most common irritants — especially for sensitive, acne-prone, or reactive skin. Beyond irritation, fragrance is poorly regulated. The term “fragrance” can legally hide a mix of undisclosed chemicals, including allergens, phthalates, and petrochemicals.
What to do about it?
Be selective. Try to avoid products with artificial fragrance if they stay on your skin for long periods—serums, creams, and masks. You can be more relaxed with cleansers, which are washed off quickly.
And yes — I love perfume. I’m not giving that up. I compromise by keeping most of my skincare fragrance-free and enjoying scent through perfumes on clothes or hair. You can also look for products with natural fragrances derived from essential oils instead.
And for the “It's not like I am eating it” argument — remember contraceptive patches. If something on your skin can prevent pregnancy, ingredients applied daily can absolutely enter your bloodstream.
Number 3: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
Ah, yes — the reason for those luxurious bubbles.
SLS is a surfactant that allows oil and water to mix and creates foam. It’s cheap, effective, and found in cleansers, shampoos, and body washes. Foam feels “clean,” but that tight, squeaky sensation? That’s often your skin barrier being stripped.
SLS is strongly associated with irritation and allergic reactions, especially with frequent use. While it’s regulated (products can contain up to a certain percentage), that doesn’t mean it’s ideal for your skin — particularly if you’re dry, sensitive, or reactive.
What are some other ingredients to be mindful of?
Especially if you have sensitive skin:
-
Phthalates
-
Benzophenone
-
Synthetic dyes (FD&C or D&C + numbers)
-
Triethanolamine
-
Mineral oil
-
Imidazolidinyl urea
-
Propylene & butylene glycol
-
PEGs (polyethylene glycols)
All in all, making informed decisions is the most important!
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s awareness.
We’re lucky to live in a time where there are alternatives for every skin type and condition. My skin (and hair) simply does better without these ingredients — yours might too.
If you remember just these three — parabens, artificial fragrance, and SLS — next time you shop, you’re already ahead of most people. Pay attention to how your skin reacts. Once you start noticing the difference, being mindful becomes second nature.
And trust me — you won’t want to go back.
