The Story Behind the Routine

This ritual exists because I’ve always been drawn to a particular kind of glow. Not oily. Not shimmery. But that dewy, almost steamy skin — the kind that looks like someone just stepped out of a sauna or came back from a long walk in fresh air.

I don’t naturally have that skin. So I set out to find ways to get it!

What I eventually realised is that there are actually two types of glow. One comes from the outside — hydration, circulation, how you treat your skin. The other comes from the inside — how regulated you are, how rested you feel, how connected you are to yourself. And the real glow only appears when those two meet.

That’s why this ritual is longer. It’s not meant to be rushed or squeezed between tasks. It’s designed to give your skin what it needs and give you the space to slow down. This is one of those moments where taking your time is the point. Set some time aside, get comfortable, light a candle if you want, and let this be more than skincare.

Get that Glowing Skin with This 6 Step Routine

step 1

Start with a Thorough Cleanse

Cleansing is the cornerstone of any effective skincare ritual, and doing it right can transform your skin. A thorough cleanser removes makeup, sunscreen, excess oil, dirt, and environmental pollutants that build up throughout the day. Left unchecked, these impurities can clog pores, lead to breakouts, and dull your skin’s natural glow. Cleansing is an essential step in the skincare ritual for glowing skin.

Have you heard of double cleansing?

⌛️✨ Time needed: 2 – 3  minutes

Make sure to try the double cleanse method—a two-step approach that’s become a staple for skincare enthusiasts and dermatologists alike. This method ensures every last trace of buildup is removed while respecting your skin’s natural barrier.

STEP 1: Oil-Based Cleanser

An oil-based cleanser works like magic for removing oil-soluble impurities such as makeup, sunscreen, and sebum. The science is simple: like dissolves like. The oils in the cleanser bind to these impurities, gently breaking them down without stripping the skin.

Oil cleansing is especially beneficial for dry or sensitive skin, as it hydrates while it cleanses. Even for oily skin types, it can help balance sebum production by preventing over-drying, which often triggers excess oil production.

 STEP 2: Water-Based Cleanser

Once the surface layer of impurities is removed, a water-based cleanser comes in to finish the job. This step tackles water-soluble dirt and sweat that the oil cleanser may have left behind.

It ensures your pores are truly clean, creating the perfect canvas for serums, moisturizers, or treatments to penetrate more effectively. Look for gentle, pH-balanced cleansers that clean without over-stripping the skin barrier.

While double cleansing is transformative at night or throughout the day, most experts agree it’s unnecessary in the morning because your skin repairs itself overnight, producing natural oils that support its protective barrier—over-cleansing can disrupt this process.

step 2

Gentle Exfoliation (2 times/week)

Gentle exfoliation, performed twice a week, is a key component of a balanced skincare routine. This practice aids in removing dead skin cells, promoting cell turnover, and revealing a brighter, smoother complexion.

Here are some of its benefits:

  • Prevents Acne and Reduces Oil: Regular exfoliation helps prevent acne, reduce oiliness, and improve skin tone.
  • Enhances Product Absorption: By clearing away dead skin cells, exfoliation allows for better penetration and efficacy of subsequent skincare products.

The Guidelines

⌛️✨ Time needed: 2 – 3  minutes

Make sure to limit exfoliation to once or twice a week if you have sensitive or dry skin. You can choose between two types of exfoliation:

  1. Physical Exfoliants: These include scrubs and brushes that manually slough off dead skin cells. Use with caution to avoid microtears, especially on sensitive skin – I dont’t recommend it.
  2. Chemical Exfoliants: Ingredients like alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs) dissolve dead skin cells without abrasive action. AHAs are suitable for dry or sun-damaged skin, while BHAs are effective for oily and acne-prone skin. My favorite is Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser.

For Sensitive Skin: Opt for gentle exfoliants containing lactic acid or mandelic acid

step 3

Use a Toner or Essence to Hydrate and Prime

Toners are a pivotal step in skincare rituals for glowing skin, designed to balance the skin’s pH, remove residual impurities, and enhance the absorption of subsequent products. Selecting the appropriate toner for your skin type can significantly impact your skin’s health and appearance.

Which Toner Should You Choose

⌛️✨ Time needed: 2 – 3  minutes

Make sure to limit exfoliation to once or twice a week if you have sensitive or dry skin. You can choose between two types of exfoliation:

  1. Physical Exfoliants: These include scrubs and brushes that manually slough off dead skin cells. Use with caution to avoid microtears, especially on sensitive skin – I dont’t recommend it.

step 4

Mask + Meditation: Glow Inside and Out

Combining a face mask with meditation creates the ultimate self-care ritual, nourishing both your skin and your mind. While the mask rejuvenates your skin, meditation helps you find inner peace, leaving you glowing inside and out. This is the most enjoyable step in the skincare ritual for glowing skin.

Choose your skincare mask

⌛️✨ Time needed: 10  minutes

1. Hydrating Mask:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Retains moisture for a bouncy texture.
  • Aloe Vera: Soothes and hydrates.
  • Cucumber Extract: Refreshes and calms irritation.

2. Brightening Mask

  • Vitamin C: Boosts brightness and reduces pigmentation.
  • Turmeric: Fights inflammation and enhances glow.
  • Niacinamide: Evens out skin tone.

3. Detoxifying Mask

  • Charcoal: Absorbs excess oil and toxins.
  • Kaolin Clay: Gently purifies without stripping the skin.
  • Tea Tree Oil: Antibacterial and soothing.

Choose your meditation

After applying your mask, use the time you need to sit with it on to pick your favorite type of meditation and get going:

  1. Guided MeditationA teacher or recording leads you through a journey of relaxation, visualization, or focus on specific intentions (e.g., gratitude or self-love).
  2. Body Scan Meditation: A practice of focusing on different parts of your body to release tension and become more in tune with your physical sensations.
  3. Breathwork Meditation: Focuses on controlled breathing techniques to calm the mind and energize the body.

step 5

Choose and Layer your Serums

Layering serums correctly can amplify their benefits and give your skin the glow it deserves. Serums are concentrated treatments designed to target specific skin concerns, but the way you pair and apply them can make all the difference.

step 6
